It is also used by the protagonist Lyra Belacqua to uncover secrets and fight against the oppressive forces of the Magisterium. Alethiometers were originally created as a tool for measuring the purity of gold and other precious metals. The device was invented by the Master Alchemist Paracelsus in the 16th century. Over time, the device was adapted for use in determining the truthfulness of statements. The compasses are made of electrum, a precious metal that is both valuable and a powerful electrical conductor. When a statement is spoken into the device, the compasses react to the amount of truth in the statement. If the statement is completely truthful, the compasses will remain still. If the statement is partially truthful, the compasses will twitch slightly. If the statement is false, the compasses will vibrate violently.
